Music Video: "Ong Ong" - Blur

We've always been massive Damon Albarn fans and here are Blur with a brand new track and a tribute to our other favorite thing: 8-bit gaming! Also, ice cream. Need we say more?

Music Video: "Being Beige" - The Smashing Pumpkins

Our favorite modern-day American poet Billy Corgan is back with more Smashing Pumpkins goodness. To 6-year-old me, watching the "Tonight, Tonight" music video was akin to watching my favorite cartoon show, or better. I grew up discovering and rediscovering the Pumpkins' vast musical legacy and decided very early on that Corgan had a way with words that spoke to me on a very personal level and tickled my brain in places it had never been tickled before. And so, it shouldn't come as a great surprise that I became immediately obsessed with this beautiful music video and its (sometimes subtle and sometimes quite in-your-face) references to the Smashing Pumpkins' older records. Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie are just two of the great works called forth by the Smashing Pumpkins' new music video to "Being Beige", the first single off of their ninth studio album Monuments to an Elegy. Yes folks, that's a hoodie, get over it. Enjoy!

Geek Gifts Under $20 for the Beirut Secret Santa Season

Are you the secret Santa of a total geek? Are you sort of confused about what to get them? Well that's alright, because we've got you covered. Below are four presents under $20 that are sure to please that one weird person from the office you got stuck Christmas shopping for. All of the following items are available at Gift Mania Collectables on Bliss Street, Hamra!

Thor's Hammer Mj√∂lnir Key Chain ($10-20)

For your comic-obsessed friends. We liked this one in particular, but there is a huge variety of other comic book, anime, and film-related key chains available. And when we say huge we actually mean gargantuan.

Rubik's Cube ($10-15)

This is always a good choice for a puzzle/game freak, and if you think they may already have the classic cube, you can choose from tens of other IQ game designs.

Game of Thrones Mystery Box ($15)

These super stylized mini figurines will make excellent desk-buddies. Everyone is a Game of Thrones fan nowadays, so you practically cannot go wrong with this one. The boxes are sealed, and each contains one random GoT character. This means less choosing pressure on you! Mystery boxes are also available from The Big Bang Theory, Marvel Comics, classic horror films, and more!

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Necklace ($15)

The wizardry and witchcraft craze is far from over with J.K. Rowling proving to be full of yet untold tales from the world of Harry Potter. There are even a few previously unreleased bits of Potter goodness coming out this Christmas! So treat your mates to a magical artifact from Hogwarts. Our favorite is the Deathly Hallows necklace, but you will find other pendants, key chains and some earrings. Even wands, robes and action figures!

Music Video Double Bill: Little Dragon [Nabuma Rubberband]

Currently, our favorite album is Little Dragon's Nabuma Rubberband. It took us a little while to get used to it since it was released back in May, but for the past few days it's been on repeat. Two of our favorite tracks off the album were given the Nabil treatment. The music videos to "Klapp Klapp" and "Pretty Girls" respectively tell a continuous, and very strange story. Zombies, beauty pageants, drug lords, and some more zombies towards the end. Need we say more? Of course if you watch more closely, you will notice there is also the semblance of a delicate love story somewhere amid all the voodoo and ritualistic bleeding and stuff. Check out the video to "Klapp Klapp" below (directed by Taylor Cohen) and if you like it, have a look at the sequel as well. Enjoy!

Music Video: "Shape" - Glasser

Watch the beautiful Cameron Mesirow a.k.a. Glasser roam around a Wonderland-esque home in this mesmerizing music video from director Jonathan Turner. We absolutely loved this song at first listen, and we hope you enjoy it too! For more Glasser goodness, check out her full live performance on KEXP.

Listen: Holding On To Dust

Check out our latest 8tracks playlist below. A compilation of songs about unrequited love and the struggles of the hopeless romantic. The title was inspired by a line from Grimes' "Devon" (at least we think that's what she says), as well as the theme of dust in Alexander Pope's Eloisa to Abelard (our favorite poem, maybe ever)
Give it a listen and follow us on 8track for more stuff like this (and some stuff that is not like this as well). Enjoy!

Listen: "Five Leaves Left" - Nick Drake

45 years ago today, Nick Drake released his debut album Five Leaves Left. We're big fans of the little-known folk master and like to spread the music he left behind every chance we get. We love every single tune on this album, but if you're a first time listener we recommend "River Man", "Day Is Done", and "Man In A Shed".

Check out this link for more information on Five Leaves Left at the time of its release, and if you're not familiar with the sad and beautiful sounds of Nick Drake, have a listen below. Enjoy!

Music Video: "Peace On The Rise" - Chad VanGaalen

We've been saying for a while that Canada is the new music capital of the world. Heavy G sent a music video our way today that proves just that. Check out Chad VanGaalen's "Peace On The Rise" from his fourth studio album Diaper Island.
The terrific tune is accompanied by a beautifully animated music video --directed by VanGaalen himself-- which features ancient aliens bird-watching in a field of giant mushrooms while getting high (we think)
Another (old but) great release from Sub Pop Records. Did you find the egg salad sandwich?

Listen: Four/Twenty 2014 Playlist ♬

Tomorrow is the big day. Your checklist probably includes pizza, fruit roll ups, and a good soundtrack, so we've taken it upon ourselves to create a short but sweet playlist of all the funky, folky music we've been hooked on since 2014 started. Not all of these tracks were released this year. In fact, some of them are down right old. But we like to think all of them capture the spirit of April 20th, 2014 rather well. Enjoy!
